Due to the rising cost of living and current housing crisis, tiny houses are increasing in popularity and being considered by many people as alternate accommodation. Compared to purchasing a new dwelling or apartment, a tiny house is often regarded to be a unique and affordable option for first home owners, downsizers or people seeking an innovative, low-impact lifestyle.

However, there can be hidden traps when buying a tiny house. They are often advertised as not requiring council approval, but many tiny houses do require development approval and other approvals for connection of services.

Tiny houses are governed by both local and state planning legislation, which should be considered before purchasing one. Potential owners need to be aware of current legislation that regulates the number and location of tiny houses on a property. Many people don’t realise that it also does not allow a tiny house to be the primary dwelling on a site.

To help potential investors in tiny houses understand these requirements, Lachlan Shire Council has a Fact Sheet on its website. If you are thinking of purchasing a tiny house and want to know more about them and how to navigate the regulations read the fact sheet.

If you have further questions or need more information about tiny houses please contact Council’s Environment and Planning Department on 6895 1950.
